when someone with talent
turns from it as if to shield
their eyes from a too-brilliant sun
it is reminder,
a cry that when something puts you
on the floor what comes next
is a choice
and if someone stays down,
convinces their body the floor
feels good enough
and is comfortable enough
a little part of spirit
is severed from me
and the world
